Study path

You would eventually apply for the PGDE after graduating from us. Quite a lot of our students support themselves by working as a private tutor. It is not a bad idea for you to spend some time when you can afford to be a private tutor just to have a feeling of teaching. You can also be a peer tutor of our department and help your younger classmates. When it is convenient, you should also try to rephrase what you have learnt in class to your friends and family members. If you can make what you are learning in class interesting to them, you can be a good high-school teacher. Think about being an RA for your teachers. They may be busy with their research and need help on the teaching side. You can help them preparing materials and earning some invaluable teaching experience. Some of our teachers also receive teaching grants and need RAs to help execute their teaching grant proposals. These related teaching experience would help you apply for the PGDE and future schools. There are also plenty of community centers in need of teachers. They may not want you to teach economics, but if the subject they need someone to teach is something you can handle, do work for these community centers to gain practical teaching experience. Record feedback of your teaching in a systematic way. Aim at having a teaching portfolio by the time you graduate from our undergraduate program. This can be evidence to support your future job applications.

Many of our alumni are high-school teachers now. If there are any mentor-ship events, do attend them and get to know these alumni and their work.
