MESSAGE

FROM THE CHAIR

The Department of Economics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is widely regarded as one of the leading economics departments in Asia. The Department welcomes and recruits the best students from all over the world. We give them rigorous training in economic theory, analytical skills, and applications. We are proud to say that many of our graduates are now occupying prestigious positions in the academia, corporations, and governments.

Currently, the Department offers four postgraduate programmes – M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Economics, M.Sc. in Economics, and M.Sc. in Applied Economics (in a double-degree programme offered jointly with Northwestern University).

M.Phil. in Economics and Ph.D. in Economics are research degree programmes. These two programmes are designed to equip students with solid theoretical and empirical foundations to enable them to conduct independent academic research. Each year, around 20 students are admitted from a worldwide pool of applicants. Abundant financial assistance is provided to qualified students.

Some of our past M.Phil. graduates continued their study in top-notch Ph.D. programmes overseas, e.g. Harvard University, UC Berkeley, Caltech, Duke University, London School of Economics, and University of British Columbia, while others obtained positions in corporations, particular those in the financial sector.

Our Ph.D. graduates are holding positions in the academia, governments, and leading corporations. Examples are: Tsinghua University, Renmin University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Sun Yat-sen University, National University of Singapore, National Development and Reform Commission, China Investment Corporation, and UBS Investment Bank.

M.Sc. in Economics is a taught master programme that provides comprehensive training in economic analysis for students who aspire to careers in business and further study. Over 1,000 students have graduated from this programme since its inception in 2013. Our alumni excel in diverse professional positions in such corporations as Merrill Lynch (HK), J.P. Morgan Chase (HK), BNP Paribas (HK), Shanghai Clearing House, Tencent Holdings Ltd., Census and Statistics Department (HKSAR) and PwC Management Consulting (Shanghai). Generous admission and performance scholarships are granted to outstanding students.

Our pedagogy extends beyond classroom learning. Students in postgraduate programmes are required to carry out independent research at different degrees of originality and intensity. They participate in weekly guest seminars, company visits, industry forums, and career workshops.

Starting 2020-21, we will offer a double-degree programme jointly with Northwestern University, Evanston. Students in this programme will spend 10 months at CUHK, taking courses from CUHK and Northwestern faculties, followed by 7 months at Northwestern. Students will learn from top scholars in two world-renowned academic institutions and benefit from the extensive networks of the multicultural faculty, student, and alumni bodies. Students who successfully complete this programme will be awarded Master of Science in Applied Economics (CUHK) and Master of Science in Social and Economic Policy (Northwestern University).

In the coming years, our Department will continue to grow in strength. We will continue to develop the environment for education and research. We will continue to nurture our students for better careers. Do come and join us. We could be your important stepping stone towards a brilliant future.
