Study path

Undergraduates should think that consulting firms mostly require generalists with one or two core competences. An ideal candidate would be a quick learner and are highly adaptable to different work environments. Today you may be working in Germany yet tomorrow you would be flying to Singapore for half a year of work in a completely different environment. To nurture this kind of flexibility yet be sharp at all moments requires you to work beyond the coursework. Sharpening your languages and communication skills appear to be really important. Imagine explaining a complex economic theory in simple jargon-free sentences to your clients. Think of them as policy-makers, lawyers or accountants. You are also required to think in the shoes of others a lot. What are your clients' objectives? What sorts of constraints they are facing? What kinds of technical tools are required to address their concerns? How do you amass resources from others to achieve their objectives? They are all applied economics in a fast-paced working environment.

Students are encouraged to practice debates and other school events and communicate with non-economics majors within CUHK as much as possible. Joining the English tables or working as a student ambassador would be a great plus. As much as economics is concerned, communicating them easily to people without economics training is the core of your training. One or two competencies you can sharpen are such as economic modeling, statistical inferences, policy analyses, simulations, etc. Forming small groups and, in a weekly basis, practice presentations of any topic will be immensely useful too.

Exchanges and internships are indicators of your ability to cope with different environments. Do apply for them.
